Virginia’s Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) awards quality levels to child care and preschool programs based on four nationally recognized standards and best practices: (1) education and quality of teachers, (2) curriculum and assessments, (3) learning environment, and (4) interactions among children and teachers.
New Statewide Quality Ratings The General Assembly passed legislation in 2020 requiring the Department of Education to establish a uniform quality rating and improvement system for all providers accepting public funds by 2023. The system will focus on the quality of teacher-child interactions in all publically funded infant, toddler and preschool programs. It will ultimately align health, safety and quality expectations, measure cost impact and incentivize private providers to take public funds.
